Midsummer Open Meeting Shildon – 21st June 2024

by Brad Wight

Given that we aren’t currently part of the North East youth or senior track and field leagues, it’s not too often we get a chance to race on our own track. Thankfully the league put on a Friday night open meet and Crook showed up in good numbers!

Six of us took part in the Mile. Alex Hird finished in second place with track debutantes Alex Mitton and Andy Simpson coming very close to breaking the 5 minute mark. Sam Etherington and myself were further back. Kate Storey came second in her heat, adding another club record to her CV in the process, well done!

Alex Merryweather and Heather Jones competed in the throwing events, Paul Campbell and myself were in the jumps, Peter Coser and Jess Montgomery both set age group club records in the sprints as did Matty Richardson in the 800m. Maisy Newby-Higginbottom smashed PBs at 800, 200 and the long jump. Alex Mitton entered the 400m at the last moment when Sam decided to withdraw.

It was good to see everyone enjoying themselves and our home track being used to its full potential. Hopefully as we continue to increase in numbers we can enter the league one day.
