Raby Races – 11th May 2024
by Paul Wragg Training for a good time or training for a good time? I’ve never been one for training for races, unless it’s anything over a 1/2 marathon. So after 5 days in Magaluf and with a couple of runs under my belt I thought I would stamp Club Championship Race #2 in the book. After 5 days in the heat and all the edges of working day life washed away like a stone on the shore of Palma Nova, I
Hamsterley Forest 10K Trail – 21st April 2024
by Jill Berry Denyse Holman & Jayne Henderson convinced me that it would be a nice idea to register to run Hamsterley 10k trail race. The day of the race we all met up at the Nest car park looking a little nervous and not sure of what to fully expect. We met with Mark Standbridge and Jason Marr too and we all went to collect our race numbers. The run nation marshals were lovely and the event was very well organised. Looking
Alnwick Castle Trail Half Marathon – 17th March 2024
By Gerry Hehir Sunday morning, after the presentation evening, saw me and Jane set off on our next half marathon run, this time we were heading north up to Alnwick Castle and a run around the castle grounds. We met up with our very own Crook star Kelly who had decided to add a trail half marathon to her marathon training programme. We all gathered below the castle walls next to the river (wet and muddy) the ground looked as clarty as
Harewood House Trail half marathon – 13th January 2024
by Gerry Hehir Saturday morning saw me and Jane set off on our next half marathon run, this time we were heading back to Yorkshire and it was the Harewood House Trail half marathon. The weather was cold but clear and the sun was shining. It was on a new course from last year, instead of 2 laps around a very hilly and muddy trail we did the 1 lap and then they added an even hillier and muddier second loop. The
Blanchland Moon Runner – 9th December 2023
by Sam Etherington This race was a new one to the series and going from the previous events it was going to be a good one. I didn’t realise however, before entering, that it clashed with the NE Champs so I’d double booked myself and felt I had to give both a go. After a good run out at South Shields I had a couple hours turnaround before heading up towards Northumberland, Amy came along as well to see if she could
Blyth Sands 5 Miler – 3rd December 2023
by Geoff Hewitson Described on the race entry form as “A beautifully scenic, always inspirational, often challenging, approximately 5 mile handicap race along the sands between Blyth Harbour and Seaton Sluice Harbour” (wouldn’t disagree with any of that) 2023 was the 63rd running of what is one of the region's oldest races. Despite lots of expressions of interest, ultimately there were only three Crookites in this year’s race - myself and “Sands Race debutants” Lisa Donaldson and Phil Healey. The start time
Ravenstonedale 10k – 26th November 2023
by Josh Pearson I only signed up for this race around 1 week before the event took place. I thought it would be great to test myself over a harder and hillier 10k with mainly up and downhill and basically no flat sections at all. I arrived at the event around 1 hour before the race. I had a wander around the small village and the outskirts of the village and the views were out of this world. I managed to check
Kielder Half Marathon – 6th October 2023
by Paul Orange Steep decline signs are all around the course at the Kielder half marathon, and I thought that could be the title for the story of my build-up for this event, due to injury, poor life choices and work commitments. Despite the most horrible inverse taper you’ve ever seen, at 7.00, I was in my car headed up to Kielder, driving through endless drizzle, and parking up in yet more drizzle and mist, so much so, standing on the dam,
Gateshead Trail 10K – 12th August 2023
by Joanne Hope This event had never really been on my radar until I was talking to Emma a little while ago who mentioned that she was entered and that it was a nice race. I had a look and it sounded good so I signed up. There were four of us from Crook, Patricia was also entered, both she and Emma had done the race several times previous, and myself and Ken who were first timers. It seems to be a
Elvet Striders Willow Miner Trail Race – 26th July 2023
by Geoff Hewitson History This fairly long-established local race has undergone a number of changes over the years. Club members of a certain vintage will no doubt remember it by its original name of the “Rose Tree 5”, after the pub in Shincliffe where the post race buffet and presentation was held. The latter was moved to a new venue (the Court Inn) some years ago and the race renamed the “Court Inn Clamber”, though still using the original ‘two and a
