Mike Mallen Memorial Fell Race – 14th June 2023
by Brad Wight Wed 14th June 2023 Four of us made it over to Keswick for the local club’s annual ‘Round Latrigg’ fell race which skirts around the summit of the hill rather than going over the top. This year the 5.5 mile race was dedicated to Mike Mallen, a much respected member of both Keswick AC and Crook AC who passed away suddenly last year. One of Mike’s former training partners, Martin Harbisher, was with us and he introduced the rest of
Trail Outlaws Penshaw Half Marathon – 18th June 2023
by Paul Wragg In 36 years I had never been up Penshaw Monument. As of Sunday the 18th of June I’ve now been up and down it 3 times from every angle possible. All the way up, halfway down, around, back up, all the way down and back up again. Sometimes steps, sometimes on gravel other times on grass. I’ve basically completed it there now and I’ve got the medal and the T-shirt to prove It. I had booked this race a
North East Grand Prix fixture 3 – 14th June 2023
by Alex Hird It was a cracking summers day on Wednesday, with temperatures in the mid 20’s. It was not however a great evening for athletics, as it was just too warm! Anyway, enough of me twisting, I’d entered two races for this fixture. First up was the mile. When I looked at the start list for this race, I was abit anxious as I had the slowest PB from all 16 runners, but I saw this as a chance to get
NEMAA Fixture 2 – 5th June 2023
by Geoff Hewitson The second NEMAA Track & Field League meeting of the 2023 season took place last Monday evening, once more in near perfect weather conditions. The men's team had a reasonable turnout of 9 competitors, including a welcome return to NEMAA competition for Jason Marr. A combination of unavailability and Kimberley being struck down with Covid at the 11th hour meant that the ladies only had the bare minimum of 3 competitors necessary to constitute a team. The men’s team
Swaledale Marathon – 10th June 2023
by Gerry Hehir Saturday morning saw me and Jane head off to Reeth for 2023 Swaledale marathon. Nothing new about that I suppose until we rewind to about 6 weeks ago, someone asked Jane if she was running it this year 🤔. Unlike other years where we had put in lots of time and effort to train for this tough run. So we started (sort of) our training runs. I managed 3 and Jane a couple more, all of them in cold
North East Grand Prix Fixture 2 – 24th May 2023
by Alex Hird Wednesday evening saw the 2nd North East Grand Prix fixture of the season at a sunny Monkton Stadium. I was in the 800m, along with young Matty Richardson from the junior section who was making his competitive track and field debut. My heat came first, and I ran a season's best of 2:06.16 Still some work to do for me to get below 2 minutes. Matty lined up a few heats later, arriving right after his school cricket match. This was his
Windermere Marathon – 21st May 2023
by Joanne Hope After being MIA from the club for a few years, I was running sporadically at best. I’d put a lot of weight back on, I was massively unfit, miserable and I missed the club. I needed something to motivate me and get me back on track (literally). I’d always wanted to attempt the ‘iconic’ distance and knew I would have to take the training seriously so decided to sign up. I’ve always enjoyed rural, countryside runs so decided that Winderemere
Rob Burrow Leeds marathon – 14th May 2023
by Simon Pickering It seems kind of fitting that my first race report is for my first marathon, but here goes…. I had originally planned to do the Yorkshire Marathon as my first one, due to it starting in my birthplace of York, but a lack of organisation meant I’d forgotten I’d be sat on a plane on that day. Being the tight Yorkshireman that I am, I didn’t want to lose my money, and after a phone call with Run for
North East Masters Athletics Association (NEMAA) Track and Field League Meeting 1 – 15th May 2023
by Geoff Hewitson The opening NEMAA Track & Field League meeting of the 2023 season took place last Monday evening in near perfect weather conditions for the time of year. Despite a couple of late withdrawals, the mens team still had a healthy 10 competitors, including NEMAA debutant Danny Oakley, and the welcome return of Percy Parkin after an absence of a couple of years from NEMAA competition. The ladies squad was much thinner on the ground with only 4 competitors
Les Allcorn 10k, Hulne Park, Alnwick – 9th May 2023
by Mel Riley After the cancellation of the Run Nation event at Ouston Airfield, I decided to find another race to re-route to. With nothing much around the local area, it was a midweek trip to Alnwick for the Alnwick Harriers annual 10k race at Hulne Park. I didn’t fully appreciate just how far away Alnwick is from Darlington (and even further when you have to battle through rush hour traffic!) so in typical Mel style I arrived with 15 minutes to
