Sunderland 5k – 11th July 2024
by Amanda Taylor This Northern Athletics 5k Championship race welcomed a squad of 11 Crook runners - 10 lads and me - to join almost 500 other athletes in this fast, traffic free, road race. Billed as one of the fastest courses in the country, it's ideal for anyone looking for a PB and of course, I was. On arrival I bumped into Clare R with Harry then Mark S and Lee T who were all telling me I should go for
North East Masters Athletics Association (NEMAA) Track and Field League Meeting 3 – 1st July 2024
by Geoff Hewitson The third NEMAA Track & Field League meeting of the 2024 season took place last Monday evening at the usual venue of Monkton Stadium in Jarrow. The overall turnout from the club was 14 (9 in the mens team and 5 in the ladies). Most of these were the “usual suspects” but there was also a welcome return to NEMAA competition for Sharron Trevor, who reckoned it was about 15 years since her last appearance at the Track
City of York AC – York Evening Series – 4th July 2024
by Brad Wight Myself and Alex Hird traveled down for the third meet of the series. We’d attended the first event and really liked the atmosphere. This time we weren’t the only representatives of the North East. Darlington Harriers had a few athletes out and a lad from Jarrow and Hebburn won the elite high jump. Hirdy and I both went in the same heat of the mile, Alex took the win in a cracking time of 4:44.44 and I battled
Hyde Park Harriers Summer Mile Leeds – 26th June 2024
by Brad Wight I entered this event in Leeds as I was away overnight with work. I’d raced the night before at a small scale one mile race in Lincoln and I’d mistakenly thought this would also be another race with a couple of dozen runners max but I was very wrong. On arriving at the park I realized it was quite a bit bigger than that! Club tents, coffee and food vans, the big inflatable finish line, digital timing board,
Midsummer Open Meeting Shildon – 21st June 2024
by Brad Wight Given that we aren’t currently part of the North East youth or senior track and field leagues, it’s not too often we get a chance to race on our own track. Thankfully the league put on a Friday night open meet and Crook showed up in good numbers! Six of us took part in the Mile. Alex Hird finished in second place with track debutantes Alex Mitton and Andy Simpson coming very close to breaking the 5 minute mark.
Newburn River Run – 19th June 2024
by Amanda Taylor Hosted by Elswick Harriers, the Newburn River Run is a 5 mile out and back course, it's as flat as a pancake and uses the tarmac path along the Newburn Riverside park and Wylam Wagonway and it's such a pretty route. I had no idea who else from the club might be there but as I was waiting in the queue at the Newburn Activity Centre to collect my bib I spied Jayne H, Denyse H and Paul W
The Wall Ultra – 23rd June 2024
by Phil Healey The morning of the event we were on the road again very early to Carlisle Castle for a 7am start time. Due to some poor co-piloting & a stop to get some photos, we nearly missed the start, as we got to the start line everyone had gone off. According to the Marshall at the start line we had 30 seconds to get off before the road sweeper came through & we would be disqualified. The three of
The Long Run Collective – LRC – Tees Trailtastic – 23rd June 2024
by Claire Weir Geoff and I were having a conversation about upping our mileage and I mentioned to him that I had been given a flyer at Darlington parkrun from LRC about a new Tees Trailtastic 9 miler. Geoff, with a raised eyebrow, pointed out that the running event had been listed for quite a while in his race calendar, published every week in our favourite e-zine Crook-Ed. I assured him I do peruse the race calendar (I do 😊) and
Great Bake Saturn Run at Herrington Park – 22nd June 2024
by Sarah Fairclough After seeing lots of Crook AC members completing Saturn Runs and various other ultras, I nervously entered this 5 days before the run. My friend surprised me and entered the day before, as I was going to run alone. I had joined the Facebook page and read how friendly, inclusive and supportive theses runs were. I had originally entered the 5-10k thinking I would probably just manage the 10k, the last year has been difficult with injury (plantar) and eye problems. I
