by Brad Wight Me and my 10 year old daughter Adelaide went down to South Park for the monthly mile. Heather Jones was also there. It's a very similar route to the parkrun, only you take the high road along the river meaning you don't have to do that little hill. Usually it's a proper handicap where runners line up beside a cone with your predicted time on and are released at ten second intervals on the whistle. Unfortunately, due to one

by Brad Wight Myself and Sam Etherington travelled up Weardale to St Johns Chapel last Tuesday night. We thought it might be hard to get parked in a small village but there's a decent sized car-park right beside the village green where the start line was. Torrential rain in Bishop and Crook probably put a lot of people off entering as numbers were half what they normally are but the weather was perfect up the dale. Mild with a tiny hint

by Brad Wight Myself and Alex Hird traveled down for the third meet of the series. We’d attended the first event and really liked the atmosphere. This time we weren’t the only representatives of the North East. Darlington Harriers had a few athletes out and a lad from Jarrow and Hebburn won the elite high jump. Hirdy and I both went in the same heat of the mile, Alex took the win in a cracking time of 4:44.44 and I battled

by Brad Wight I entered this event in Leeds as I was away overnight with work. I’d raced the night before at a small scale one mile race in Lincoln and I’d mistakenly thought this would also be another race with a couple of dozen runners max but I was very wrong. On arriving at the park I realized it was quite a bit bigger than that! Club tents, coffee and food vans, the big inflatable finish line, digital timing board,

by Brad Wight Given that we aren’t currently part of the North East youth or senior track and field leagues, it’s not too often we get a chance to race on our own track. Thankfully the league put on a Friday night open meet and Crook showed up in good numbers! Six of us took part in the Mile. Alex Hird finished in second place with track debutantes Alex Mitton and Andy Simpson coming very close to breaking the 5 minute mark.

by Brad Wight You may remember I entered this race last year, it’s a famous old race on the border of Cheshire and Staffordshire dating back to the early 1980s. It was intended to be the opposite of New York City’s slightly downhill Fifth Avenue Mile which attracts the best milers in the world. The Killer Mile is a road race, exactly a mile long, but up a ridiculously steep hill with gradients ranging from 12% to 25% and 550 feet

by Brad Wight Another cracking club day out despite the downpour which managed to soak everything inside our once waterproof tent… The U11 lads were off first with Joe Hall Junior completing the 1km race in 5:20, he looked so determined on the long downhill finish, teeth gritted just like his dad at a NEMAA sprint! The U11 girls were next up, Eleanor Shaw and my youngest daughter Adelaide making their XC debut alongside Meadow Winham. All three slogged up the hill then

by Brad Wight What an unbelievable turnout for Crook! 66 runners across 14 teams with all age categories represented. More runners than any other club! The organisers weren’t joking when they responded to our entry submission with “I’m beginning to worry I haven’t ordered enough numbers.” Alistair Hart had to run with a hand drawn number and I noticed a few XC numbers being re-cycled too! The first race of the day saw the Women, Veteran Women (over 35) and V50 men

by Brad Wight The Northern Cross Country Championships were held last Saturday at Sedgefield and what a cracking event it was. The organization was excellent, the weather behaved, and we had some cracking results! Rory Hart and Alex Merryweather were first up for Crook in the U17s race. The front runners were extremely fast, covering the 3.5 mile course in little over 18 minutes. Rory finished 20th overall in a time of 19:28 (roughly equal to a 5K time of 17:15) which

by Brad Wight One of the things I've loved most about this club since joining three years ago is the team spirit and camaraderie at team relays and cross country meets. There’s something about bad weather that amplifies this and Saturday was no exception, we had some good individual and team results and as far as I know, everyone really enjoyed the day! After a quick detour to South Shields parkrun, we had the tent set up in time for the first
